Outstanding Kapampangan

        Dr. Leonardo C. Canlas, the President of Mabalacat City College, is this year’s Most Outstanding Kapampangan in the Field of Education. He received the prestigious award at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center on December 11, 2012 during the 441st founding anniversary celebration of the Province of Pampanga.

        Raised by an industrious farming family of San Simon, Pampanga, Dr. Canlas diligently worked hard for his education.  He earned his Bachelor and Master’s degree in Industrial Education at the Don Honorio Ventura College of Arts and Trade, Bacolor, Pampanga.  He immediately pursued and eventually obtained his Doctor of Education degree from the Philippine Normal University, the country’s premier teachers’ college. 

      Believing that education is a sine qua non to the success of every Kapampangan, Dr. Canlas devoted his life in the teaching profession serving as classroom teacher and a school manager in different public and private schools in Pampanga.

         He is currently the President of Mabalacat City College, a local College established to afford equal opportunities for the marginalized youth to achieve their envisioned future of becoming professionals someday.  Under his care and with his guiding principle, Quality Performance – Our way of Life, the college soared high to be one of the Higher Education Institutions to reckon with in the region.

         Dr. Canlas is well-loved for his gift of transforming a mediocre school to performing school at par with the national level standards making him a highly respected educator.  He was chosen as the only Filipino to represent the public schools in the Asia Pacific Leadership Academy for School Principals at Seoul, South Korea organized by the APCEIU (Asia Pacific Center of Education for International Understanding) on October 30 – November 7, 2012.

         This year’s recipients of the MOKA include Senator Manuel Villar (Business and Entrepreneurship), Allan Pineda popularly known as apl.de.ap (Arts), Lillian Borromeo (Culture), and Catalina Bagasina (Government Service) among others.According to the Arts, Culture and Tourism Office of Pampanga (ACTOP), MOKA’s objective is to recognize individuals who have stood out in their respective professions and have brought pride to the Kapampangan race.  Awardees were chosen through a rigid selection process by a committee comprised of prominent individuals.

         To date, more than 400 individuals have been awarded the MOKA trophy.  Kudos to Dr. Leonardo C. Canlas for this well-deserved achievement.
